Monitoring of pollutants in fish and sediment

Updated 2013-01-26

Monitoring aims to follow certain pollutant concentrations and their changes in fish tissue and sediment. Both inland lakes, one river and coastal areas are sampled. Lapland monitoring site is Lake Inarijärvi. Project is managed by Finnish Environment Institute (SYKE).

This is a National Implementation Plan (NIP) project

Methods & Procedures

Procedures and methodology used for, e.g., sampling and sample storage, sample pretreatment, extraction and analysis, including which laboratories are involved, references to methods employed, etc.

- Selected heavy metals and organic contaminants are analysed of samples collected annually in different freshwater environments in various parts of Finland. Method description Fish: Gillnets, hook and line. Sediment: sediment corer. - Samples were stored deep frozen (-20 C) before extraction. - Extraction: HNO3 digestion (metals), organic extraction (org. contaminants) - Analysis description: ICP, ICP-MS, GF AAS (metals), GC/MS (organic contaminants), Institutes, FEI and National Public Health Institute
