Metals in precipitation, Mercury in air

Updated 2017-10-20

National Environmental Monitoring Programme in Sweden, in the "Air" programme area. Eleven chemical parameters are measured in precipitation every month, and in the air Hg (TGM and TPM) is measured weekly. Measurements are carried out at 4 stations in Sweden and one in Finland.  The project is part of an international network that follows the variations in the levels and deposition of heavy metals, particularly mercury, in the Arctic region.

This is a National Implementation Plan (NIP) project
Comments and additional information:

Heavy metals and total Mercury in precipitation are measured at Hallahus, Råö and Bredkälen (Close to AMAP-area). Heavy metals are also measured at Aspvreten. In co-operation with the Finnish Meteorological Institute (FMI), measurements are carried out at Pallas in the far North of Finland, close to the Swedish border (within AMAP-area).

Methods & Procedures

Procedures and methodology used for, e.g., sampling and sample storage, sample pretreatment, extraction and analysis, including which laboratories are involved, references to methods employed, etc.

All analyses are performed at the accredited laboratory at IVL. ( Monitoring results follow up on the Swedish environmental goals and the EU directive (2004/107/EG) standards. Sampling of Hg (particulate) in Air/aerosol: Every other week; Hg (gaseous) in Air/aerosol: 1 day / week Hg in Bulk precipitation: Monthly.
