Airborne Contaminants in Lake Sediments and Fish in Lapland

Updated 2000-10-23

Objectives: To determine the temporal and spatial trends and accumulation rates of heavy metals and persistent organic contamineants and to differentiate between natural and anthropogenic sources of heavy metals. Summary: Heavy metal and persistent organic contaminant concentrations and accumulation rate are measured in Pb-210 dated sediment cores of small lakes in different areas of Finnish Lapland.

This is a National Implementation Plan (NIP) project
Comments and additional information:

Heavy metals in sediments (3 lakes), and biota (4-6 lakes) were reported in 1990-1992 as a part of HAPRO Research Project on Acidification. Sampling has covered 5 sites in Lapland, with sediment stratigraphy determined. Heavy metals (5 lakes) and persistant organic contaminants in sediments (3 lakes) and fish have been determined from the same lakes. Selection is based on undisturbed sediments, fish species assemblages (Arctic Char preferred) and site location (geography and soil geology).
